Postel’s Law

– rule of systems communication which also apply in debate. Devised by one of the founders of the internet, Jon Postel.

Be conservative about what you send and liberal about what you receive.  Write with discipline and listen with tolerance.

A good rule for bloggers, or when debating with strangers online.

  1. Great quote! I always love to find another great quote. Thanks.

  2. You’re absolutely right, sometimes I come across such bizarre characters through my blog, the best thing is just to turn a blind eye to their cowardice of hiding behind a screen for anonymity and spewing nasty comments.

  3. The rewrite to Write with discipline and listen with tolerance is actually my coinage, rather than Postel’s. But thanks for storing it here, I’d forgotten it.
